Born That Way

Whether you like, hate, or are indifferent to Lady Gaga you do have to recognize that she’s not afraid of expressing what she thinks.   Her latest song, BORN THAT WAY, is a direct expression of her views on human differences and what it means to be “normal”.
Here are some of the lyrics.

CHORUS
I'M BEAUTIFUL IN MY WAY
'CAUSE GOD MAKES NO MISTAKES
I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN THIS WAY
DON'T HIDE YOURSELF IN REGRET
JUST LOVE YOURSELF AND YOU'RE SET
I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN THIS WAY

BRIDGE:
DON'T BE A DRAG, JUST BE A QUEEN
WHETHER YOU'RE BROKE OR EVERGREEN
YOU'RE BLACK, WHITE, BEIGE, CHOLA DESCENT
YOU'RE LEBANESE, YOU'RE ORIENT
WHETHER LIFE'S DISABILITIES
LEFT YOU OUTCAST, BULLIED, OR TEASED
REJOICE AND LOVE YOURSELF TODAY
'CAUSE BABY YOU WERE BORN THIS WAY
NO MATTER GAY, STRAIGHT, OR BI,
LESBIAN, TRANSGENDERED LIFE
I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN TO SURVIVE
NO MATTER BLACK, WHITE OR BEIGE
CHOLA OR ORIENT MADE
I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN TO BE BRAVE

The reason that I post these lyrics is because they fit in directly in what I want to talk about in my blog this time.  It’s interesting that I had a discussion with Tau Malachi on Wednesday, started writing this blog, and Lady Gaga released this single today.

What the lyrics are saying is that no matter what we “are”, we are who we should be.  Many times we ask why?  Why were we given the family we came from, why the disabilities and problems we deal with, why we have a particular sexual orientation, or why we seem different from those around us?  The answer is that our differences and our individuality is actually a gift.   We were born the way we are for a reason and as Lady Gaga so aptly puts it… “Cause God doesn’t make mistakes”.  We are given the life we’re given for a purpose, so we can learn and grow and get closer to God in the process.

The key is not the hand we’ve been dealt, but what we do with it.  Every aspect of our life is here to  point us closer to the path of love and compassion.   These events in our lives, the feeling different, difficulties, problems, etc. can either drive us to self-hatred and anger or it can help us to find love for ourselves and others.  The ego drowns in the differences and seeming separation, causing pain and suffering.  If we can break that cycle and see the actual unity within our differences and our connectedness to the All we can turn to love, compassion, and God.  It’s our choice – not always easy, but something we can keep turning our attention back toward.  This is the path of enlightenment and liberation.
